Who am I?
I once wrote a poem with this same title when I was 18:
I am a queen.
One like never before seen.
Black.
Beautiful.
Strong and wise.
My body’s not the only thing that can mesmerize.
Words of wisdom flowing from my lips,
Surely will take your eyes from my hips;
Up here because you need to know this.
My bloodline is thick with
Warriors.
Healers.
Mothers.
And every powerful being in between.
I am intricate.
Pragmatic.
Divine.
I am serene.
I am all that I desire to be.
Because true power lives in me.
And then, Sis—life happened… a lot.
So much that I forgot my own words.
For years, I thought I had lost my way. But now I know—it was all part of the journey.
Because how can someone guide you through places they’ve never been before?
I know the dark places you’ve been in. I know what it feels like to be stuck, exhausted, and unseen.
I know—because I’ve been there too.
One of my favorite quotes by Rumi says:
“The wound is where the light gets in.”
It reminds me that even in our hardest, most painful moments, transformation is possible.
Just like a seed needs the darkness of the soil to break open and reach for the light, we, too, find our resilience, our strength, and our power in adversity.
And Sis, you don’t have to navigate it alone.
I’ve worn many hats and sharpened many skills along the way.
But the most valuable thing I’ve learned? How to rise.
